Avoiding Locksmith Scammers

Losing your car keys is stressful enough without having to worry about being scammed while trying to replace them, too.

At South Shore Lock & Key, we understand that your car is more than just a vehicle; it's a lifeline. So when you lose your keys, you want to get them replaced as soon as possible.

But it's important to realize that just because a business is on Google doesn't mean they're dependable. Unfortunately, there are plenty of scammer "locksmiths" out there who will rush you into scheduling them, show up and charge exorbitant prices, then possibly not even fix your car key problem - or create a new one.

Having been in the automotive locksmithing business for over 13 years now, here are a few tips for avoiding locksmith scammers:

  1. Ask Questions - A good, dependable locksmith will not get irritated with your questions or try to rush you into service. Ask about the price, what you'll be getting for that price, if there are any extra fees (i.e. programming, cutting, transponder, e.g.), if they are coming right to you, and other things along those lines.

  2. Get a Firm Quote Beforehand - A trustworthy auto locksmith should be able to give you a firm quote for key duplication or replacement before they show up. There are scenarios where a range may be necesarry - if you have a key stuck or broken in an ignition, if you're not sure whether an alarm is active which can lock us out of the immobilizer system, etc - but for the most part, you should be able to get a firm quote for road call, part, cutting, and programming before the tech shows up.

  3. Good Google Reviews - Fly-by-night scammer companies - and this applies to HVAC technicians, chimney sweeps, and other mobile services - will typically set up a quick website, throw a few terms related to their craft on there, and wait for people to call so they can show up, take their money, and then disappear. A dependable locksmith will have good internet presence, a Google business listing, and plenty of reviews from satisfied customers.

As mentioned, South Shore Lock & Key has been a trusted asset in the South Shore community for well over a decade now, serving the automotive, residential, and commercial needs of the area with excellence and integrity, and we have the reviews to prove it!

Whether you need a new car key, your locks changed, or your exit hardware for your business replaced, we are your dependable, trustworthy local locksmith, ready to save you from a scam!
